30 Days of Indie Travel: Day 21

Q. When we travel, our senses are heightened. We feel more alive and we’re freer to do things we might not at home. We can be whom we want. There’s an air of urgency to everything we do – we know our time here, in this place, and with these people, is limited. If we want to do something, we have to do it now. It’s no wonder then that many travelers have relationships on the road. Tell us about a “special someone” you met while traveling. 30 Days of Indie Travel via BootsnAll.

I see this man, and I’m captured. He’s sweet. He makes me laugh. He’s got a goatee and wears a baseball cap a lot of the time. He’s most comfortable in jeans and a T-shirt, and always flip-flops. His feet are flat like a caveman so he doesn’t require any arch support.

The man surprises me: He is a treasure hunter. He is a helper. He is a lover.

He is my husband.

You shouldn’t be surprised. I didn’t have some secret soiree while traveling RTW. I couldn’t have an affair if I wanted to – my husband was by my side 24-7, though there were those few “free days,” in which Spanky would always joke that he was going to get a massage with a happy ending. I know he never followed through (he better not have – this ain’t no open marriage, my friend).

When we returned from our first big trip everyone asked me, “How have you changed?” One of the biggest changes I could pinpoint was my relationship with my husband. We went from bound life partners to teammates. My husband’s friends are a big priority in his life, and while I wouldn’t have it any other way, I needed to know that I was his No. 1. Maybe it sounds selfish, but I think anyone who is married will understand. If you dedicate your life to someone else, you gotta be all-in.

The trip helped us establish this, teaching us how to fight fairly, cooperate, and support one another everywhere and in all things.

Every day isn’t a walk in the park, but we’ll always have Paris. No, scratch that. We’ll always have Queenstown and Sapphire and Lanta and Cusco and … many more down the road. Above all, we’ll always have each other as teammates, as lovers, and as friends.
